Background
This panel was established in 1996 and aims to enhance bilateral observation systems in the Pacific Ocean. The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and Japan's Science and Technology Agency (STA) coordinate efforts under this UJNR panel. Research topics range from fisheries studies to developing procedures for measuring greenhouse gases.

Types of Exchanges
Panel meetings are used to initiate new collaborations through joint proposals. Special meetings of joint interest are co-sponsored by both sides.

Accomplishments
This panel has facilitated the continued cooperation between NOAA’s Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory and the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center in observing North and Equatorial Pacific oceanic properties.

Benefits
Under this panel, meetings have stimulated initiatives for collaborative observing projects. Cooperation between Japan and the U.S. in Pacific Ocean observations is crucial for a greater understanding of weather and climatic events such as El Niño.
