In November 2005, Dr. Robin Waples of the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Center will meet in Tokyo to discuss collaborative research with Dr. Shuichi Kitada (Tokyo University of Science and Technology) and Dr. Hirohisa Kishino (University of Tokyo).  Their research, which is funded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, focuses on how to develop methods to increase population size of depleted marine species with hatchery supplementation while maintaining genetic diversity.

North Carolina Sea Grant, Dr. Craig V. Sullivan attended and presented the following paper at a symposium in Hokkaido: Sullivan, C.V. Couch, C.R., Garber, A.F., Westerman, M.E., Rexroad III, C., Hiramatsu, K., and N. Hiramatsu. 2005. Hybrid Striped Bass Farming in the United States: 20 Years of Breeding Research and Industry Development. Proceedings of the 4th International Symposium of the Hokkaido University 21st Century Center of Excellence (21 COE) Program, Reproductive, Genetic and Disease Management in Aquaculture and Ocean Ranching, 8-11 October 2005, Hakodate, Japan.

North Carolina Sea Grant, Dr. Sullivan also attended and presented the closing remarks at the 1st International Symposium of the Hokkaido University 21st Century Center of Excellence (21 COE) Program, Potential and Perspective of Marine Bio-Manipulation, 26-27 February 2005, Sapporo, Japan.

North Carolina Sea Grant, Dr. Sullivan also visited the Hokkaido National Fisheries Research Institute, Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan, 1-3 March 2005, to conduct research on fish reproduction with Dr. Takahiro Matusbara and Ms. Sayumi Sawaguchi.

US Host

North Carolina Sea Grant

Dr. Yoh Yamashita, Director of the University of Kyoto Marine Laboratory spent two weeks at North Carolina Sea Grant during which he and Dr. John Miller developed a Japanese flounder version of our red drum ecophysiological model to predict growth.

Dr. Naoshi Hiramatsu and Kaori Hiramatsu, M.Sc., both formerly of the Faculty of Fisheries, Hokkaido University, Hakodate, Japan worked in Dr. Sullivan's laboratory at NCSU over the last several years on the functional genomics, physiology, and biochemistry of fish reproduction.  Dr. Hiramatsu is a Senior Research Associate and K. Hiramatsu is a Research Assistant Supervisor at NCSU.
