The Second Joint Meeting of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources' Panel on Aquaculture was held in Washington, D.C., on October 16 and Seattle, Washington on October 27, 1972. The Meeting was opened by acting chairman Mr. William Shaw, and the welcome of Dr. James Stater, U.S. Coordinator of the UJNR Program, was followed by the statement of Dr. Donald P. Martineau, Deputy Associate Administrator for Marine Resources of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Dr. Atsushi Furkawa and Mr. William N. Shaw, then, were elected co-chairmen for the Meeting.
During the meeting, members of each Panel gave general description of aquaculture activities in their respective countries. These descriptions provided a good background for detailed discussions held during the field trips which took place from October 17 through 26.
Plans for the exchange of both scientists and literature were formalized during the meeting. Identification of the projects and scientists to be involved will take place during the next few months. The literature exchange planned during the First Joint Meeting has begun and the first exchange of scientists occurred in 1972. Further planning was conducted for joint programs of research involving scientists of both countries.
The discussions held during the Second Meeting updated the information exchanged in 1971 in Tokyo on the status of aquaculture and problems facing this field. The principal problem areas of mutual concern to both countries, pathology and nutrition, were identified as the subjects for joint research efforts to be initiated as soon as possible. It was concluded by the Panel that extended visits by aquaculture-ists of one country to the other country such as that now underway by Dr. H. Kan-no in the U.S. are very beneficial and should be continued.
The next meeting of the Joint Panel on Aquaculture is planned for late 1973 in Japan.
