The First Joint Meeting of the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources' Panel on Aquaculture was held in Tokyo, Japan, on October 18-19 and 29, 1971. The Meeting was opened by acting chairman Dr. Atsushi Furukawa, and the welcome of Mr. Kunio Kagayama, the Director-General, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Reserach Council Secretariat, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, was followed by the statement of Dr. Robert W. Hiatt, Scientific attache, U.S. Embassy, Tokyo. Dr. Atsushi Furukawa and Mr. William N. Shaw, then, were elected co-chairmen for the Meeting. Dr. Yoshiki Shigihara of the Science and Technology Agency, Coordinator of the UJNR Program, presented remarks on the UJNR Program and made several suggestions for making such exchange programs successful.
During the meeting, members of each Panel gave general descriptions of aquaculture activities in their respective countries. These descriptions provided a good background for detailed discussions held during the field trips which took place from October 20 through 28.
During the meeting, initial plan for the exchange of both scientists and literature were developed. The details will be worked out during the next few months. The literature exchange will begin immediately and the first exchange of scientists should occur in 1972. Planning was also initiated for joint programs of research involving scientists of both countries.
Very full and frank discussions were held, so that the state-of-the-art in the culture of various organisms and the problems being encountered in each country were identified. Some such problems now facing both countries include water quality; mechanization; disease, parasites and predators; development of better culture organisms and the development of artificial food for organisms in culture. While aquaculture has long been successfully practiced extensively in Japan, and the technology is generally very well developed, it was concluded that many special projects now underway in the U.S. would be very helpful in the further improvement of Japanese aquaculture through solution of difficult problems. The Panel concluded that visits of some length by Japanese to the U.S. and by U.S. aquaculture-ists to Japan would be immediately beneficial to both countries.
The next meeting of the Joint Panel on Aquaculture is planned for late 1972 in the United States of America.
