Collection SummaryThe National Marine Protected Areas (MPA) Center History Collection documents the formation, organization, statutory authority, management, and operations of the National Marine Protected Areas Center, which was implemented by the Department of Commerce and the Department of the Interior under Executive Order 13158. The mission of the National MPA Center is to facilitate the effective use of science, technology, training, and information in the planning, management, and evaluation of the nation's system of marine protected areas. The MPA Center's headquarters is located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Silver Spring, Maryland, in the National Ocean Service (NOS)/Office of Coastal and Resource Management (OCRM). The MPA Center History Collection includes materials which document the development of the MPA Center's headquarters operations; its Federal Advisory Committee; and its regional operations, including the Science Institute, co-located within the NOAA Fisheries offices in Santa Cruz and Monterey, California. It also features information on the development of MPA Center programs and information resources. The MPA Center History Collection is housed in NOAA Central Library. For
