Special cataloging/processing situations:
NOAA publications
Unlike the treatment of various binding situations that are described
in this manual's files entitled Special cataloging situations: Bound
with and Special cataloging situations: Copy designations, the
treatment of NOAA publications is exceptional. NOAA publications
are comprised largely of technical memoranda that are issued as series.
They are bound such that, for any given series, copies one eventually will
"disappear" from the analytic records as discrete entities, and copies
two will remain as such.
The local practice for handling publications that comprise a NOAA series
is to allow the accumulation of the requisite two copies of each volume,
both of which appear initially on the analytic record as c.1 and c.2, each
with its own barcode. Periodically thereafter, the local binding
practice is executed whereby all copies one are bound together in appropriate
increments. Each bound volume of "first copies" then appears on the
serial record for the series.
After the addition of any bound volume is made to the serial record
for the series, revise the affected analytic records. In the analytic
record for each issue that has been bound:
- remove c.1 from the record, but allow c.2 to remain
"c.2"; and,
- add a MARC 590-Local Note such as:
590
SILVER SPRING: C.1 bound with nos.x-x. For holdings, see
series record (call no. for series).
Do not apply the last two steps retroactively.
