* Use OLAI only in MARC 949.
** Rely upon instructions from reference and senior technical
services librarians for location status indications.
The default values that are supplied by the catalog software for both
"Item Type" and "Location" may be altered as necessary to reflect different
formats or locations. Prefer to alter values for Item Types rather
than for Locations. N.B. Not all item types appear as default
values in the table above; if necessary, consult the list of Sirsi
names of Item Types (below).
Example application:
In the record for a digital map that is available via the World Wide
Web, the cataloger would supply the code:
049
OLAI
for which the system would supply the following default values in MARC
949 |h, |l, and |t:
949 [call no.] |w LC |c1 |h OLAI |i
38398100843550 |k MAP |l INTERNET |t INTERNET
The cataloger would alter the default Item Type value:
949 [call no.] |w LC |c1 |h OLAI |i
38398100843550 |k MAP |l INTERNET |t MAP
Other examples are:
- sound recordings on audiocassette(s) that would
be coded by the cataloger as "OLAV" in MARC
049 and MARC 949 subfield h, for
which the value for "Item Type" would be altered from the
default "VIDEO" to "AUDIO";
- maps that are acquired via the U.S. Federal Depository
Library Program that would be coded as
"OLAG", for which the value for "Item
Type" would be altered from the default "BOOK" to "MAP";
- electronic books, for which no default exists
in the above list. Code as "OLAI", then alter the "Item Type"
value to "E-BOOK".

VIDEO
Video
As of September 2002, NCL has yet
to receive any digital video discs (DVDs); until receipt thereof, no decision
about DVDs' Item Type and Location values will be made.
A complete list of Sirsi Item Type value options may be viewed in the
Sirsi Cataloging Configuration List
for Item Type Policy; however, NOAA Central Library employs only
the options that appear in the list above.
Other Codes in NOAA Library
System
The Sirsi Cataloging Configuration Policy
List for Holding Codes shows the self-defined holdings codes for
each NOAA library that contributes records to NOAALINC (http://www.lib.noaa.gov/uhtbin/webcat).
NOAA Central Library's
Historical Holding Codes
NOAA
Central Library's historical holding codes range from four to seven
characters and reflect earlier delineations of the NCL collection that
now may generate inaccurate item type and/or location values.
