Editions

Special cataloging/processing situations:

Editions

In NOAA Central Library bibliographic records, edition appears as an element in the call number and is followed immediately by the year, which is enclosed in parentheses, e.g.,

QA
432
.C48
2nd ed.
(1958)**

For purposes of constructing the call number, edition shall include any term that denotes a revision.  This may include, but is not limited to, the terms "edition", "revision", "update", "version", etc.   Any edition statement that appears in MARC 250 in NCL records is reflected in the call number.  Use the vernacular form to express the edition, i.e., use the language found on the piece.  Use abbreviations for these terms as listed in the AACR2R Appendices B.

No special subfields are required in MARC 090 and MARC 949 fields to accommodate edition-related information in the call number.  Edition and date data are included in subfield b of MARC 090, whereas MARC 949 has no subfield b:

090     QA432 $b .C48 2nd ed. (1958)
949     QA432 .C48 2nd ed. (1958)

**  Parentheses are supplied in accordance with ANSI/NISO Z39.71-1999 standard, Holdings Statements for Bibliographic Items, Table 3.1, Punctuation used in the extent of holdings area.
