Local practices for barcodes

Special cataloging/processing situations:

Local practices for barcodes

MARC 949 |i reflects barcode numbers for all items cataloged.  If the cataloger has not applied a barcode to an item, then the Sirsi Unicorn (i.e., local) system will supply a faux barcode number.  Apply barcodes to all documents except for the following types:

Journals
Non-physical documents, including Internet resources
Microforms (NCL holds microfilm and microfiche)

Barcodes and bound volumes

The actual bar code that is attached to a bound volume is reflected in the MARC 949 |i field for only the first document contained within bound volume.  MARC 949 |i fields for the remaining documents in a bound volume reflect system-generated barcode numbers.

Caveat:  Recall that the call numbers for titles other than the first title in a bound volume reflect the call number of the first title.  Therefore, for titles other than the first title in a bound volume, the call numbers will be the same as the one for the first title, but the barcode numbers will be different for each.  See also:   Special cataloging situations :  Bound with
