MARC fields - Local practices : 949 - Detailed Local Holdings Scope The 949 tag contains the call number and item specific information for a bibliographic record. The Unicorn system uses the information from this tag to create the call number and item level records that attach to the MARC record in the NOAALINC database. The 949 tag appears in the OCLC archive record and subsequent iterations of that record (in NOAALINC, e.g.), but will not appear in the OCLC master record. Input one or more 949 fields that include information for each item in the library associated with the MARC record. Repeat the 949 tag for each volume of a multi-volume monograph or serial; use a single 949 tag for multiple copies of a single volume. Each 949 field must contain one subfield |a; followed by one subfield |v (if applicable); followed by one subfield |w; and one or more subfields |c. Each subfield |c must contain one subfield |h and may contain other subfields described below (if applicable). Repeat subfields |c as many times as needed to describe additional copies. All subfield designations should be lowercase. Indicators Both indicators are blank. Subfields |a Call Number. Enter the call number as it appears in the 090 field, but without an intervening subfield delimiter between class number and book number portions. Enter only one subfield |a per 949 field. 949 G460 .A23 1711
|v Volume Number.
Follow each subfield |v with appropriate subfields from the ones that follow. Enter only one subfield |v per 949 field. Use the following examples as a guide: 949 Q1 .A3 |v 1923 ... (volume consists of a year, e.g. an annual)
Use the caption found on the item to enter the volume information. Use the language found on the item itself and abbreviate according to Appendix B in the AACR2. Leave no spaces between an abbreviation and the number. If the combined data for subfields |a and |v exceed 40 characters (including spaces), then the SIRSI catalog interface will neither store nor display the entire call number. When it is necessary to include abbreviated elements in the call number, consult the current edition of Anglo-American cataloguing rules (especially Appendix B) for abbreviations, and, in the absence of appropriate guidance there, another standard source, such as a dictionary or style manual. |w Class scheme.
