MARC 793 - Local Added Entry - Uniform Title

Scope

The 793 field contains a locally-devised word or phrase that is traced for a reason of importance to the local collection that is not otherwise addressed in cataloging rules.  NCL uses the 793 to identify a special format(s) and/or special collection(s) that is associated with the cataloged document.

NCL uses standardized verbiage for 793 |a entries, for which the choices are:

 
CEDAR document. Apply to any document in any format that reflects publication by the Coastal and Estuarine Data Archeology and Rescue Program (CEDAR).
CLASS document
Apply to records for documents acquired from the NESDIS Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System program.
CoRIS.  "Coral Reef Information Service" - apply to any document that covers at any level coral reefs/coral reef ecology; catalogers may apply freely.
Cruise report. Apply to any cruise report, regardless of its NODC accession status.
Digital image. Apply when the bibliographic record is based upon a directly-accessed, i.e., tangible, document in this format; or, apply when the bibliographic record describes any other format but is accompanied by a directly-accessed digital image(s).
Digital image online.
Apply when the bibliographic record is based upon a remotely-accessed, i.e., intangible, document in this format; or, apply when the bibliographic record describes any other format but is accompanied by a digital image(s) to which online access is facilitated by a URI ("hot link") within the record.
Digital video. Apply when the bibliographic record is based upon a directly-accessed, i.e., tangible, document in this format; or, apply when the bibliographic record describes any other format but is accompanied by a directly-accessed digital video(s).
Digital video online.
Apply when the bibliographic record is based upon a remotely-accessed, i.e., intangible, document in this format; or, apply when the bibliographic record describes any other format but is accompanied by a digital video(s) to which online access is facilitated by a URI ("hot link") within the record.
Education and outreach document. Applied to all CoRIS education and outreach materials and documents as directed by special project.
International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 document.
Applied by IPY bibliographer when the bibliographic record is based upon a directly-accessed, i.e., tangible, document.
International Polar Year (IPY) 2007-2008 online document. Applied by IPY bibliographer when the bibliographic record is based upon a remotely-accessed, i.e., intangible, document; or, applied when the bibliographic record is based upon a tangible document to which online access is facilitated by a URI ("hot link") within the record.
Marine Protected Areas (MPA) document. Applied to any documents produced by the National Marine Sanctuary Program (aka Office of National Marine Sanctuaries) and by the National Estuarine Research Reserve System (NERRS).
NOAA cruise report. Apply to all NOAA cruise reports.
NOAA digital map online.
Applied by NCL to records that describe digitized versions of NOAA's Raster Navigational Charts (NOAA RNCs™) published by the Office of Coast Survey (OCS).

NOAA document (NESDIS)

 

Apply to any record that describes a document that has been published by NOAA (i.e., a NOAA entity is reflected in MARC 260 |b).  Qualifier designates one of the five NOAA line offices from which document emanates, for which the choices are:  NESDIS, NMFS, NOS, NWS, OAR. For NOAA multi-office publications, no parenthetical qualifier is used.  See also entry NOAA online document (below) for electronic resources published by NOAA.
NOAA historical document (NESS) Applied to documents published by the predecessor agencies of NOAA. Qualifier designates the acronyms of the agencies. for example: BCF for Bureau of Commercial Fisheries; C&GS for Coast and Geodetic Survey; ESSA for United States Environmental Science Services Administration; NESS for United States National Environmental Satellite Service; WB for United States Weather Bureau.
NOAA home page (NOS) Apply to all records that describe NOAA websites.  Qualifier designates one of the five NOAA line offices from which document emanates, for which the choices are:  NESDIS, NMFS, NOS, NWS, OAR. For NOAA multi-office publications, no parenthetical qualifier is used.
NOAA online document (NWS) Apply to any record that reflects a URL in MARC 856 for a NOAA publication.  The URL may reflect the resource being cataloged or a version of the resource being cataloged. Qualifier designates one of the five NOAA line offices from which document emanates, for which the choices are:   NESDIS, NMFS, NOS, NWS, OAR. For NOAA multi-office publications, no parenthetical qualifier is used.
NOAA restoration document (NMFS) May be applied by NCL for pertinent documents as directed by local project coordinators. Qualifier designates one of the five NOAA line offices from which document emanates, for which the choices are:  NESDIS, NMFS, NOS, NWS, OAR. For NOAA multi-office publications, no parenthetical qualifier is used.
Ocean Exploration Program document.
May be applied by NCL for pertinent documents as directed by local project coordinators.
Original collection of Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler.
Apply to records that reflect holdings for NOAA Central Library and include a Local Note (MARC 590) that contains in part the following phrase: "... have inscription by Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler: 'Library for the Survey of the Coast', indicating items from Hassler's original collection."
REST_ARS
Apply to Restoration Documents for the restoration ecology theme, Advancing Restoration Science. See also entry Restoration document (below).
REST_CWC
Apply to Restoration Documents for the restoration ecology theme, Collaborating with Communities.  See also entry Restoration document (below).
REST_ERA
Apply to Restoration Documents for the restoration ecology theme, Estuary Restoration Act of 2000.  See also entry Restoration document (below).

Restoration document (Type of organization) May be applied by NCL for pertinent documents as directed by local project coordinators. Qualifier designates one of the types of organizations that contributes to NOAA's Restoration Library database, viz.:  Other Federal, State, Multistate/Regional, Local, Non-profit, Academic and research, Nongovernmental, International.
Sea Grant document. Apply to any record that reflects a document that has been published by a Sea Grant Program component, whether federal or state level.  See also entry Sea Grant online document (below) for electronic resources published by Sea Grant Program components.
Sea Grant online document. Apply to any record that reflects a URL in MARC 856 for a Sea Grant publication.  The URL may reflect the resource being cataloged or a version of the resource being cataloged.  Apply for issuance by any Sea Grant Program component, whether federal or state level.
Signal Corps document. Apply to documents published by the United States Army Signal Corps (1863-1962). 
TIROS document. Apply to documents for meteorological satellite TIROS.
UJNR. "United States-Japan Cooperative Program in Natural Resources" - apply to all documents that emanate from this body.
VDMS.
Applied by NCL catalogers to digital images created for the Ocean Exploration Project's Video Data Management System.
