MARC field 690

MARC fields - Local practices :

MARC 690 - Local Subject Added Entry - Topical Term

Scope

The 690 field contains a subject heading that is not a Library of Congress Subject Heading (LCSH), although it may be subdivided like an LCSH.

Indicators

Both indicators are blank.

Subfields (non-comprehensive treatment)

|a Topical term or geographic name.

NCL limits entries for local subjects that may appear in this subfield to the following terms:

AXBT data* Airborne/aircraft-launched expendable bathythermograph observations.
Bathymetry The study of water depths. May be applied to bathymetric methodology and/or observations.
CTD data* for "Conductivity Temperature Depth"; apply to oceanographic observations.
[Genus species]  i.e., Latin names, or, scientific binomials, for common names of plants and animals that are not represented in LCSH, e.g., Percophis brasiliensis. Use MARC 690 only if access to Latin Genus species names of organisms are otherwise not provided in the subject added entries.
Nutrients Apply to oceanographic observations.
Riparian vegetation (non-wetland) Apply to Restoration ecology collection documents that address this habitat type, per project-specific guidance.
STD data* for "Salinity Temperature Depth"; apply to oceanographic observations.
Soft bottom Apply to Restoration ecology collection documents that address this habitat type, per project-specific guidance.
Submerged aquatic
vegetation
Apply to Restoration ecology collection documents that address this habitat type, per project-specific guidance.
Water columns Apply to Restoration ecology collection documents that address this habitat type, per project-specific guidance.
XBT data* Expendable bathythermograph observations.

* Regard these treatments of the names of deep-sea probes as patterns for other kinds of probes that may be encountered in oceanography research reports, e.g., undulated oceanographic recorder [UOR], mechanical bathythermograph [MBT], autonomous pinniped bathythermograph [APB], etc.

Subdivision of MARC 690 |a entries

When subdivision of a local subject added entry is necessary, then construct the body of a 690 field exactly as a 65x field, i.e., employ the same range of possible subfields and delimiters as for MARC 650 or MARC 651.  The most common subfields by which 690 |a entries are subdivided in NCL records are:

|v Form subdivision.
|x General subdivision.
|z Geographic subdivision.

Examples from the NCL catalog:

690 __ STD data |z Nunavut |z James Bay |v Observations.
690 __ Submerged aquatic vegetation |x Monitoring |z United States |v Congresses.
