MARC 650 - Subject Added Entry - Topical Term

Scope

The 650 field contains a subject added entry in which the entry element is a topical term.

Indicators

Unless specified by instructions for special cataloging projects, NCL restricts its 650 verbiage to Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), and does not use indicators to distinguish primary and secondary terms.  Therefore, indicators for MARC 650 employed by NCL are:

1st indicator:     _    = [blank]
2nd indicator:    0    = LCSH

Subfields (non-comprehensive treatment)

The most common subfields by which 650 |a entries are subdivided in NCL records are:

|v Form subdivision.
|x General subdivision.
|y Chronological subdivision.
|z Geographic subdivision.

The extensiveness of some research efforts requires that NCL catalogers disregard the general guideline of providing a maximum of six (6) subject entries. When describing criteria measured by research endeavors, name each datum that is observed and impose no limit on MARC 650s to do so completely. One compilation of oceanographic research generated the following subject entries in a single record:
