Tag 949 contains the call number, holding code, and item specific information for a bibliographic record. The SIRSI Stilas system uses this information during the bibliographic record loading process to create call number records and item records that contain these specifications.
Each 949 tag consists of two parts. The first part consists of the call number, volume information (optional), and classification scheme. The second part contains one or more copy numbers each followed by applicable subfields that give copy-specific information. Each 949 tag must contain one subfield |a; followed by one subfield |v, if applicable; followed by one subfield |w; followed by one or more subfields |c. Each subfield |c must be followed by a subfield |h, then a subfield |i, if applicable. You may also add optional subfields for each subfield |c in the order given below. You may repeat subfields |c, |h, |i, along with any optional subfields to describe additional copies, as necessary.
You must enter separate 949 tags for each volume in a series or multivolume monograph. See instructions for subfield |v below for further guidance.
Indicators
Both indicators are blank.
Subfields
|a Call number. [MANDATORY] Enter the call number as it appears in the call number field (090, 086, 050, etc.), but without an intervening subfield between class number and book number portions. Enter only one subfield |a per 949 field. Note that you do not need to input the subfield delimiter and code for subfield |a--the system assumes that any text entered goes into subfield |a.
EXAMPLES
949 G460 .A23 1711
949 Q1 .A3
949 I49.6/2 EN 8
|v Volume Number. [MANDATORY, IF APPLICABLE] Enter the volume number, if applicable. A volume number may constitute a year, a sequential number, a sequential number followed by a year, a section or part of an issue of a serial or of a multipart monograph, or a combination of the above. Enter only one subfield |v per 949 tag.
EXAMPLES
949 Q1 .A3 |v 1923 (volume consists of a year, e.g. an annual)
949 SH1 .A5 |v no.1 (1988) (volume consists of number and year)
949 G460 .A23 1711 |v v.1 (volume consists of a part of multivolume set)
Enter a separate 949 tag for each volume in a series or multipart monograph.
EXAMPLES
949 Q1 .A3 |v 1923
949 Q1 .A3 |v 1924
949 Q1 .A3 |v 1925 etc.
Use the caption found on the item to enter the volume information. Use the language found on the item itself and abbreviate according to Appendix B in the AACR2. Leave no spaces between an abbreviation and the number.
|w Class scheme. [MANDATORY] Enter a code that describes the classification scheme used to construct the call number. Enter "LC" for Library of Congress classification call numbers. Enter "SUDOC" for government depository items. For call numbers that do not follow a class scheme use "ASIS". For other class schemes, contact the NOAA Central Library for guidance. Enter only one subfield |w per 949 tag.
EXAMPLES
949 Q1 .J3 |v 1991 |w LC
949 I49.6/2EN8 |v v.1 |w SUDOC
949 SERIAL |w ASIS
|c Copy Number. [MANDATORY] Enter a copy number for each item. Do not enter a caption before or after the number (e.g., do not input "c.1). Follow each subfield |c with a subfield |h, a subfield |i, if applicable, and any other applicable subfields from the list that follows. You may repeat subfield |c to describe more than one copy.
EXAMPLES

|k Current Location. The Stilas bibliographic load program will create records with a current location based upon the holding code entered in |h. If you wish to enter a different location you must do so here and in |i Home Location as well. The values entered here and in |i Home Location will override the values associated with the Holding Code. You must enter a valid Location from Appendix 1. LOCATIONS.
